Muses
A Solo Exhibition of New Works
Zwickers Gallery, Halifax Nova Scotia
Opening Reception: October 16th, 2015 at 6pm
Muse: A woman or force personified as a woman, who is a source of inspiration for a creative artist; to be absorbed in thought, ponder, contemplate, or daydream about.
Figurative painting, as I see it, is a collaboration between artist and model. I have a certain meaning or perspective I want to portray, I share my motives with the model and she plays the part. And when we two are in sync, magic happens on the canvas. The model takes on the role and becomes the muse.
The title of this group of paintings has a dual meaning by definition. A muse being the woman who inspired each painting, and its thought provoking content: to ‘muse’. These are my musings over spirituality, consciousness and the duality of our natures.
I paint women most often as they represent my personal vantage point. They are never objects which allow their inner strengths and spiritual presence to radiate. They have an emotional quality combined with a psychological connection which engages the viewer in a way that does not necessarily have to be explained. These are women of obvious beauty and yet underlying their natural allure is a quiet strength, focus and wisdom.
Symbolisms in the form of birds, orbs, myth and the use of gold and silver all have personal meanings to me and all have layers of understanding allowing the viewer to connect in their own personal way.
The subject matter in many of these works reaches back through time to esoteric teachings, ancient mysteries, and myth to portray a synchronistic view in our modern society as it was taught ages ago.
